Senior Hurling win

Hurlers Advance Cashel Community School’s senior hurlers are through to the semi-final of the Corn Phadraig, on foot of a deserved and exciting win over Bandon High School. Played at Charleville on last Friday, this Munster colleges game had everything : fast tempo, high intensity, good skill, do-or-die effort from both teams, and extra time. Conditions were mixed: brilliant sunshine, bitter cold, sticky underfoot surface, and hardly a puff of breeze. Cashel opened brightly, racing into an early lead thanks to a point from Kieran Carroll and a goal from Pa Ryan. Bandon struck back with a goal and three points to lead by two points after fifteen minutes. Shortly after that a pointed free by Johnny Grogan steadied the Cashel side and Pa Ryan tapped over a beauty from play. Cashel hauled themselves back to parity with the aid of Jonathan Grogan’s accuracy from play and from frees. Half-time score : 1 – 5 apiece. On the resumption, both teams showed serious intent and each side rattled over three points within the first seven minutes. On the tenth minute Johnny Grogan fed a sublime pass to Pa Ryan which the full-forward collected on the run and drilled to the net. The sides continued to exchange hard-won points, with CCS three points ahead at the midway stage of the second half. A moment later the Cashel right-wing back was red-carded for a mistimed tackle but the team continued to hold the upper hand. With seven minutes remaining Pa Ryan latched onto another pass and goaled clinically, giving his side a seven point lead. But Bandon were not finished. Instead they mounted a storming onslaught on the Cashel defence and poached two excellent goals and one point to force the game into extra-time on a scoreline : Cashel 3 – 12, Bandon 3 – 12. Bandon had marginally the better of the first half of extra time, until Johnny Grogan and Pa Ryan again put daylight between the teams by crashing in two superb goals. Half-time score: CCS 5 – 14, Bandon 3 – 15. Those goals set the tone for the final act of the drama, and when Dean Thompson added his side’s sixth goal there was no way back for the Cork boys. Final score a.e.t. : Cashel C.S. 6 – 16, Bandon High School 3 – 16. From one to fifteen (and 24), this was a whole-team performance of the highest order. Cashel will now meet Mallow Academy in the Munster semi-final.
