National Science week in CCS

National Science Week in CCS

National science week took place from Monday 14th November to Friday 18th November and here in Cashel Community School it was no exception!!! It was a busy week with various talks, presentations and excursions taking place both in and out of the school.
Speakers from different disciplines of science such as computer science, sports science, engineering and environmental science all addressed different year groups. These proved to be extremely interesting and beneficial presentations particularly to students interested in pursuing a career in these areas.
A group of 5th and 6th year students visited Teagasc Food Research Centre in Moorepark, where they were introduced to the use of the scientific method, the extraction of DNA from a banana and the separation of whey and casin proteins found in milk.
All 3rd year students partook in a science table quiz, with the winning team comprising of Jennifer Fogarty, Kevin Gayson Molloy, Jack Currivan and Christopher Geraghy .
One of the highlights of the week was the displaying of all second year science research projects, followed by the presentation of prizes to the winning teams. The standard of research was phenomenal and a credit to all students involved. This initiative is kindly sponsored by Amneal Pharmaceuticals based in Cashel. This is the second successive year of this initiative, and although it is still in its infancy the momentum associated with this idea is really starting to develop and grow.
