HSE Flu Alert
09 Dec 20251. Winter Flu Alert
Flu rates are rising, and very high levels are expected over the Christmas and New Year period. This increases the risk of illness and complications, particularly for vulnerable children and adults.
- Over the past ten years, around 5,000 children have been hospitalised due to flu complications.
- About 200 children required care in an intensive care unit (ICU).
- Sadly, 40 children died from flu-related complications.
The good news? There is an effective vaccine that can prevent serious complications of infection.
2. Flu Vaccination for Children
Children are strongly encouraged to get the flu vaccine.
- A nasal spray flu vaccine is recommended for all children aged 2 to 17 years and is available free of charge through the HSE.
- Vaccination protects children from flu and its complications, and also helps reduce transmission in schools and communities.
- Vaccines are available via:
- HSE school-based vaccination teams
- General Practitioners (GPs)
- Community pharmacies
3. Hygiene and Stay-at-Home Guidance
The HSE provides guidance to help you know if your child is well enough to attend school or childcare. Key measures include:
- Wash hands regularly
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Stay home if you have flu-like symptoms
