Disappointment for Senior Footballers07 Mar 2011
The senior footballers contested the Munster `C` final on Wednesday of last week, taking on St. Michael’s College, Listowel. On a warm, calm day in Clarina, Co. Limerick, Cashel were slow to start and allowed Listowel build up an early lead, 1- 2 to nil. On the tenth minute Cashel hit their first point, from a free by Craig Condon. He added another after Conor Conneally was fouled. Shortly after this Dylan Fitzell gained possession and lofted a ball into the forward zone. Pa Ryan won possession and, despite a stiff tackle, found the net. The referee, however, called back the play and awarded a free which was put over the bar. Cashel’s other score in this half came from Conor Conneally after he latched on to a driving clearance from full-back Aiden O’Connell. Half-time : St. Michael’s 1 – 9, CCS 0 – 4.
Cashel started the second half with flying colours – Conor Conneally notching a point in the opening minute and Dylan Fitzell breaking through the Listowel defence at pace and shooting for goal, only to be denied by a superb save from the Kerry goalkeeper. A little later corner forward Frank Kelleher was fouled close to goal and Dylan Fitzell struck the penalty beautifully to the back of the net. Listowel went without a score for fifteen minutes but then regained control, secured their second goal and added a few points to wind up winning by 2 – 15 to 1 – 5. The better team won, but nobody could fault the Cashel men for effort and, with a little more luck in front of goal, they could have been deservedly much closer on the scoreboard.
