Cleary Cup Rugby
08 Feb 2011On Tuesday 1st February our rugby team faced the High School of Clonmel in the Cleary Cup. The High School proved to be tough opposition on the day for us but the scoreline of 15-3 does not reflect the massive effort made by the Cashel team, most of which are first year students. Their strenght in holding off numerous tries from the High School is testament to the quality of players in our side. The future is bright for this young team.
Well done to the team and their coach, teacher John Edward O'Connor.
Official Match Report
It was Cashels first day out in the Cleary Cup with their young team. Ryan O’ Donnell opened the scoring
after two minutes with a penalty kick. Clonmel battled hard but the Cashel defence was holding them up with
some superb tackling. However halfway through the first half Clonmels persistence paid off resulting in a well worked try.
Cashel lost Cillian Maher through a facial injury. At Half time it was Cashel 3 Clonmel 5.
Cashel brought in some fresh legs but Clonmels sheer physical strength and size resulted in a second try after three minutes
into the second half. Cashel fought back and were extremely unlucky on more than one occasion not to have scored after
some great moves. Clonmel later went on to score two more trys. In the end Cashel were unlucky not to get what they
deserved and they were also missing some key players. Well done to all involved.
