CCS Students Shine in BT Young Scientists Exhibition with Ground-Breaking Project!

In a remarkable achievement, Maeve Carroll, Tori Kirwan, and Lillian Quinn, three students from Cashel Community School, have garnered international acclaim for their ground-breaking project on a natural accelerator for leaf decomposition on a lawn. Their innovative solution not only tackles the common issue of lawn maintenance but also offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical-based approaches.

Their project, aptly titled “HURRY UP AND LEAF”, delves into the science behind accelerating the decomposition process of fallen leaves, which often pose a challenge for lawn owners. The team meticulously researched various natural additives and fertilizers, experimenting with their effects on decomposition rates and soil quality. Through their meticulous trials and data analysis, they identified a blend of microorganisms and organic matter that significantly expedites leaf decomposition while enriching the soil’s nutrient content.

The girls’ dedication to their project was evident from the outset, spending countless hours in the school lab testing and refining their formula. Their enthusiasm, coupled with their scientific acumen, propelled their project to the forefront of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition, Ireland’s most prestigious science competition for secondary school students. The girls where mentored and assisted throughout the project by their science teacher Mr Quinn who had set the seeds of curiosity during the girls Transition Year experience in his Young Scientist programme which focuses’ in inspiring students to research and develop scientific concepts, possibilities’ and projects.

At the exhibition, which took place last week at the RDS in Dublin, Maeve, Tori, and Lillian presented their project to a panel of esteemed judges, captivating them with their knowledge, passion, and the profound impact of their work. Their innovative solution resonated with the judges, who recognised the transformative potential of their natural decomposition accelerator, not only for lawn care but also for promoting sustainable practices in the agricultural sector.

Their hard work and dedication were rewarded when their project was awarded the prestigious second place in the senior category of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2024.
