All Ireland Minor Trophy Visits CCS

Minor Football Cup

Pride of place in the school diary of last week went to the visit of the All-Ireland Minor Football cup on Tuesday 11th October. The Community School had three students on the victorious panel : Dylan Fitzell, Gearoid Slattery, and Cathal Quigley. Dylan played at centre-back throughout the 2011 campaign, Gearoid was goalkeeper for most of the matches, while Cathal was on the subs bench as well as captaining the school senior football team that reached a Munster final last year. The three stalwarts were accompanied by Tadhg Duggan, selector with the champions, and Rodger Kennedy, chairman of the West Board G.A.A.

Mr. Morrissey, school principal, paid tribute to the commitment of the players. During the year they attended one-hundred-and-seventeen training sessions and, in match play, overcame the traditional kingpins of Gaelic football such as Kerry, Cork, and Meath before despatching Dublin on All-Ireland day. Mr. Quinn, Gaelic games master at CCS, likewise commended the trio, while Rodger Kennedy spoke of the importance of the students committing themselves to playing for the school. The hope is that some of last Tuesday’s welcoming students will one day return to CCS as All-Ireland champions.
