The Dick Wood Cup21 Feb 2012
During his long and distinguished life, Dick Wood served many organisations and clubs, such as Muintir na Tire, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Fine Gael, Mayor of Cashel Town Council and chairman of Cashel Town F.C. His day job was as a postman, so he was known far and wide, and for many good reasons.
Dick had a great love of soccer. His favourite team was Port Vale F.C., from the midlands of England. Of course he liked nothing better than to go to Palmershill Park, Cashel, on a Sunday afternoon to see the “Town” play.
After Dick’s passing, his wife Mary and sons Thomas, Richard and Liam put a cup to be played for by school soccer teams. Rockwell College won the cup in 2009 and 2010, and then in 2011 Cashel Community School claimed the cup by defeating Rockwell 3 – 0 in the final.
This year 2012 sees the holders Cashel C.S., Rockwell College, Coláiste Dun Iascaigh (Cahir) and Scoil Ruain (Killenaule) compete for the Dick Wood Cup. The competition will begin after mid-term, with the final at Dick’s beloved Palmershill Park in late March. The medals for winners and runners-up, plus the final’s man of match award have been kindly sponsored by Joe Ahearne, Rock Bistro.
