Soccer Disappointment20 Feb 2011
The Community School’s quest for a first Munster Cup triumph ended in disappointment at Bansha on last Friday, when they had to yield second-best to a very strong side from De La Salle, Waterford. In the opening thirty minutes both teams had to contend with wind-driven torrential rain. Yet, they produced good football. Five minutes into the game, De La Salle secured a somewhat fortuitous goal. Cashel fought their way back into contention and on the twentieth minute equalised after Mark Shortt sent a long clearance upfield that was then controlled by Caolan O’Gorman who laid it off to Pa Fitzgerald and he in turn forced it through the defence into the Waterford goal.
De La Salle responded by steadily increasing the pressure on the Cashel defence and their probing efforts bore fruit with a well-worked goal on the fortieth minute. Three minutes later they added to Cashel’s woes by slotting home a third goal.
To their credit, the Cashel team carried the game to De La Salle throughout the second half and created several scoring chances that just did not find the target. For their part, D.L.S. were content to defend their lead and make the occasional dangerous looking counter-attack but without adding to their goal tally. At the final whistle, the Waterford side were winners by three goals to one, in what was a totally sporting contest from start to finish – a credit to both teams and both schools.
Cashel could not be faulted for their performance or their commitment. Each man gave full value against an exceptionally strong opposition. Full credit must go too to their manager and their coach – Mr. Michael Moore and Martin Coleman – for their unstinting dedication to the team throughout the year.
