Senior Hurlers are Munster Champions

Corn Phadraig Champions

Cashel Community School’s senior hurlers won Munster honours when capturing the coveted Corn Phadraig at the expense of Dungarvan C.B.S. last Saturday, on a scoreline of 2 – 8 to 1 – 8. Dungarvan were the reigning champions and they did not surrender their title easily in Clonmel, pushing Cashel every step of the way to the final whistle.

Cashel laid the foundations for this victory in the opening ten minutes. Aided by a stiff breeze, they penetrated the Dungarvan defence several times with full-forward Pa Ryan spear-heading the attack. He raised a white flag after two minutes, on the fourth minute he had a green flag waving and on the tenth minute he won ball, drew tackles and laid off to corner-forward Kieran Carroll who unerringly finished the movement to the net.
Dungarvan came more and more into the game during the following ten minutes to secure four points – three from frees. On the twentieth minute Josh Keane initiated what became a steady stream of points for Cashel, with Cathal Morrissey firing over two beauties, Kevin O’Donnell landing two from long range and Kieran Carroll pointing in stoppage time, to leave the half-time score in Cashel’s favour, 2 – 6 to 0 – 4.

The sizeable attendance was sent scurrying to the stands during the interval when wind-driven hailstones lashed the grounds but mercifully the arctic visitation ended just in time for the second half to begin. Scores came slowly in this half. The now sodden underfoot conditions hampered play somewhat while spirit and stamina counted equally with speed and skill. Dungarvan, assisted by the wind, launched attack after attack on the Cashel defence and after eight minutes secured a deserved goal.

Midway through the half the Waterford school strung together a sequence of three points to narrow the margin to one goal, 2 – 7 to 1 – 7. Both sides missed a handful of long range scoring chances. From play, Cashel were finding it difficult to reach the target but at the other end their rearguards were in a mean mood, staving off waves of dangerous attacks in heroic fashion. With five minutes remaining Cashel’s captain Johnny Grogan lifted the siege to win ball, solo and, despite intense pressure, split the posts from fifty metres out. In the dying moments of the game, Dungarvan pointed from a twenty metre free but the cup was on its way to The Rock. Final score : CCS 2 – 8, Dungarvan C.B.S. 1 – 8.

In goal for Cashel, Damien Hayes had an excellent game, while in front of him James Ryan, Kevin Moloney and Aiden O’Connell formed an iron wall. The half-back line of Simon Delaney, Cathal Quigley and Michael Fox withstood immense pressure while mid-fielders Dylan Fitzell and Kevin O’Donnell had a battle royal with their opposite numbers. The half-forward line of Johnny Grogan, Cathal Morrissey and Josh Keane succeeded against a much vaunted Dungarvan half-back line, while up front Kieran Carroll, Pa Ryan and Dean Thompson did the crucial business in the first half and continued to work hard in the second.

Once again this Community School team has proven its character. It was not a day for pretty hurling but for battle, and every man in a CCS jersey battled as if his life depended on it. They can be proud of themselves, so too their families, and they have done their school proud. Full marks also to their dedicated mentors, Mr. Galvin and Mr. Farrell. Cashel now advance to meet the Connaught champions on Saturday 12th March.
