Cashel Community School entered five teams in the Munster Schools Tennis Championship Shield competitions this year. The five teams got through the round-robin series to qualify for the quarter-finals and then on to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the two U14 boys teams were drawn against each other and the A team won in a very close match. The U14 girls played Loreto, Fermoy, in Kilworth but the Cork girls proved the stronger. The U19B boys lost to C.B.C., Cork, in the semi-final, 3 – 2.
Two teams went to the finals played in Rushbrooke, Cobh, on 16th May. U19A boys played C.B.C., Cork, in a nail-biting final, with the doubles of Niall Anglim and Niall Treacy winning their match, Larry Shanahan was beaten in the singles and then it was all down to Gearóid Slattery. After losing the first set he came back to win the send set in a tie breaker.
The decider then was a championship tie-breaker and after a long battle Gearóid was defeated.
The U14 boys team met High School, Clonmel, in the final. The doubles of Kevin Tobin and Ciarán Davern lost their match, Colin Ryan was defeated in his singles and after a hectic battle John O’Connor had to yield second best to his Clonmel opponent.
Many thanks to the parents who looked after the teams so well, driving them to the away games and feeding the visiting teams and, of course, thanks to all who travelled to Cork to support the two teams in the finals.
